What you'll learn

Two evenings a week at the machine. By the end you'll be confident setting up, sewing a clean seam, and completing a finished item on your own.

  • Machine care — maintenance and proper use, so your machine lasts.
  • Sewing terms — the vocabulary patterns and instructions use.
  • Sewing a seam — the foundation every garment is built on.
  • Various stitches — which stitch to use, and when.
  • Threading & bobbin winding — setting the machine up correctly every time.
  • Needles & thread — matching the right needle and thread to each fabric.
  • Finished projects — cushions, cushion covers, curtains, reusable shopping bags and more.

Who it's for

  • Complete beginners — this course assumes no prior sewing at all.
  • People working during the day; classes run Monday and Wednesday evenings.
  • Anyone wanting a practical skill they can earn from at home.

Where it can take you

  • Take in alterations, repairs and small commissions from home.
  • Make and sell soft furnishings and reusable bags.
  • Continue straight on to Intermediate Sewing and start making garments.
